Introduction

Plymouth is one of the largest cities on the south coast and the 15th largest city in England. Plymouth is branded as ‘Britain’s Ocean City’ with connections with the sea that go back to the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620.

Around 264,200 people are estimated to live in in Plymouth (ONS MYE 2016). The ONS project that if current trends continue, the population will grow to 282,700 by 2034, an increase of 7 per cent.

The number of people aged over 65 is expected to rise by 33.7 per cent between 2016 and 2034 (an additional 15,900 people). Further information on population can be found in the Plymouth Report
